Forum: netlabels Subject: New user question - license?

Hi,

I'm a musician considering uploading my music as a netlabel. However I have a question that I seem to be unable to find answers to anywhere on the site, FAQ, forums etc.:

Does uploading as a netlabel require me to release my music under a creative commons license or other specific license? If, so what are the options in terms of licenses that are allowed? It's something I'm willing to consider but I want to know whether I have to do it before I go through the upload process.

Thanks,

Nathaniel

using creative commons license is not required, but it is the ONLY possible license you can use when publishing on archive.org. read here:

So if CC licensing is not required, does that mean there is an option to post with no license, i.e. all rights reserved? That's really what I'm not so clear about.

if you want all rights, why do you upload it then to the internet? in my opinion, all rights means that people are not allowed to dowload this stuff?

Well, that's what I'm confused about... but the original reply did say "using creative commons license is not required," so I'm not sure what the other option is.

Most of the files on archive.org are websites which are not released under any license, and I can find nothing at all on the site indicating any license requirements for uploading stuff. I want to upload so that I can embed the flash player in my blog in order to promote my music and I'm trying to find out whether that would necessitate releasing it under a CC license or not.

what i wanted to say is, CC is the simplest way to tell people what they can do with your work and what they can't. you don't have to use any license when you upload your work here, and in some cases there is no real point in using CC because it is not 'ported' to some countries and has no legal power there. by default, if you are the author, you have the rights to your work, you can choose to share it or do anything with it, and you don't have to license your work for that (copyright is automatic). simply speaking, CC is voluntary, i personally dont use it just because i dont want to.

You can actually append any license to your item description that you like, sorry for the delay on this. Just put it in the description, even copyright. Though obviously, we prefer Creative Commons.
